Easter
1994-2013
  • The Orthodox custom of visiting a cemetery on the Day of Rejoicing (celebrated on the ninth day after Easter) morphed long ago into a tradition of visiting the graves of deceased relatives on Easter Sunday and having a memorial feast at the cemetery. Massive consumption of alcohol became an unavoidable part of the memorial ceremony. Chekmenev’s photographs demonstrate the sadness and grotesquerie of this popular mass ritual.
