This series is a portrait gallery of exotic denizens of the Ukrainian cityscape. The alcoholics and beggars, street cleaners and middle-class ladies, tired old men and children immortalized by Chekmenev violate conventions of uniformity. Some of them are disturbed; others are visibly satisfied with life despite their poverty and deprivation. Looking at them, we understand that such simple things as a bunch of cheap flowers or a glass of beer can make a person truly happy. The photographer relishes this urban commedia improvvisa; he loves its actors and delights in capturing their humanity, which is sometimes masked by peculiar features.
